🌿 Greener Futures: How ECI’s Tree Planting
The Climate Crisis Hits Home
Liberia, known for its lush rainforests and rich biodiversity, is facing increasing environmental threats—deforestation, rising temperatures, unpredictable weather, and flooding. For many communities, the loss of trees has meant not only environmental degradation but food insecurity, water scarcity, and health risks.
At the Eco Climate Initiative (ECI), we believe that local climate action is the key to reversing this trend—and that youth must be at the center of it.
🌱 Plant for the Climate: A Movement Rooted in Action
In 2024, ECI launched the Plant for the Climate Campaign—a nationwide, youth-driven reforestation movement aimed at restoring degraded lands, protecting watersheds, and building climate resilience from the ground up.
Our goal is simple:
Plant trees. Restore ecosystems. Inspire action.
🌍 Campaign Impact So Far
Thanks to support from local communities, volunteers, and international partners, the campaign has achieved:
- 🌳 Over 1,000 trees planted in Montserrado and Lofa Counties
- 👥 100+ youth volunteers mobilized for community planting and climate awareness
- 🤝 15 partnerships with schools, local authorities, and civil society groups
- 📚 Tree care and environmental education workshops in 10 schools
These aren’t just numbers. Each tree planted means more shade in hot communities, more fruit for rural households, and less erosion in flood-prone areas.
🧒 Youth at the Forefront
Our campaign isn’t just about planting trees—it’s about planting leadership. Young people are trained to:
- Map planting zones
- Select climate-resilient tree species
- Lead local awareness campaigns
- Monitor and care for tree growth over time
“When I planted my first tree with ECI, I felt like I was taking control of our future,” said Grace N., a youth volunteer from Lofa.
đź’ˇ Why Tree Planting Matters
Trees are one of the most effective natural tools in fighting climate change. They absorb carbon dioxide, cool our cities, improve soil health, and support wildlife. In Liberia, they also protect water sources and provide livelihoods for many rural families.
With every tree, we’re helping to heal the environment and empower communities.
🌎 What’s Next?
ECI is scaling the Plant for the Climate campaign in 2025 with:
- New planting zones in Bong, Nimba and Grand Bassa
- “One Student, One Tree” initiative in schools
- Climate storytelling sessions to highlight local success stories
🤝 Join the Movement
You don’t need to be an expert to take climate action. You just need to start. Whether it’s planting a tree, joining a cleanup, or educating your peers—every action counts.
